Nightwish: Dark Passion Play
May 15th 2008 14:44
If you have heard of this band and you live in the US, congratulations, there are now seven of us. That may be exaggerating, but this band does not often get radio play in the States, for some reason. Nightwish is what every metal band with a lady lead singer should be, but only one is. Their Scandinavian operatic symphonic metal is one of my favorite blends out there, and will soon be yours as well.
The opening song, “The Poet and the Pendulum” is a thirteen-minute epic that sets the stage for what is about to befall those who listen, like a chorus of the 19th Century European stage plays. The music is powerful and makes you feel like everything you do is powerful, especially whilst driving. Great melodies, and haunting lyrics that are woven together in a tapestry of dark delight, Dark Passion Play may be the best Nightwish album so far, although barely above Once.
My favorite off of this one is “Seven Days to the Wolves”, gotta love the devil may care song of the bunch. Easily one of the coolest bands around, because no one is cooler than Eastern European pirates playing haunting heavy metal. Nightwish is on the way up. Keep those epic albums coming and the fire burning, I am a fan for life. You should be too.
Album Rating: A
Sounds Like: Thor’s house band
Buy? If you like good music, yes
