Linkin Park: Minutes to Midnight

With a title that sounds an awful lot like an Iron Maiden song, LP’s third studio album is a complete departure from their original sound. They just went ahead and assumed that rap-metal is dead and changed up their game for this installment. While I praise them for being relevant to the current industry trends, I must say that I am disappointed that they are being relevant to the current industry trends.
There are a few songs on this album that remind us of why we love(d) Linkin Park, such as the first single “What I’ve Done”, and the party hard Shinoda rap “Bleed it Out”, but as a whole this is just not up the standard they have set for themselves in their early career. The album tends to get a bit whiny, with Chester sounding ever-so emo on several cuts, not belting it out Hybrid Theory and Meteora style.
I’m sure that Minutes to Midnight has and will continue to do well, and while it is a departure from their trademark sound, the album is a top-notch production and features some great songs, my favorite being “Shadow of the Day” which sounds like a B-side from The Joshua Tree.
Album Rating: B
Sounds like: a sedated Linkin Park
Buy? For new fans: Yes. Old fans: Just listen to the radio

Still, Chester is the best male vocal of all times.
