Great Rock Covers Part 2
May 18th 2008 06:05
The second in my ongoing article of what I think are the best rock covers of all time. Here is batch nuumber two, enjoy.
Bullet the Blue Sky – P.O.D.
One of the most unique covers ever, Bullet the Blue Sky by U2 was covered by P.O.D. on their album The Fundamental Elements of Southtown and was not something that anyone could have predicted. The band whose hits include “Youth of The Nation” and “Alive” was indeed a strange candidate to cover this classic. Bravo boys.
I Walk The Line – Live
Another oddball here but one of those that you just nod and say “Oh yea, that makes sense” afterwards. They changes up the melody a bit and threw some minor keys at it and gave us one of the best rock covers out there. It should also be noted that Chris Daughtry from American Idol Season 5 did a great cover of this song as well, heavily based on Live’s.
Higher Ground – Red Hot Chili Peppers
Who but RHCP could turn a R&B Stevie Wonder song into a raucous up tempo rock blast. Flea’s base lines churns up the beats and the energy will, as usual, plaster you to the wall. A great song covered by a great band, therefore, it is on this list. You can find it on their Mother’s Milk album.
Turn the Page – Metallica
There is nothing quite like treating a song with trademark metal hospitality. Metallica did just that on Garage Inc. with Bob Seeger’s “Turn the Page.” A beautiful song in its own right, the kings of metal decided to go with the “less is more” spin on the cut and gave us another great rock cover. Debate still rages about which version is better.
Last Kiss – Pearl Jam
Grab a tissue, in fact grab a case. Last kiss is one the most unabashedly sad songs ever written. When Wayne Chocran wrote and performed this song in 1962, he had no idea that we would still be crying about 45 years later. But he didn’t make it happen all by himself, Pearl Jam perpetuated the tragedy into the 21st century by recording this tragic, yet irresistible classic.
That’s it for now, keep checking back, there will be more to come…
