Flogging Molly: Float
May 15th 2008 14:29
The latest album form the seven piece blend of traditional Irish music swirled with upbeat punk rhythms and heartfelt lyrics; Flogging Molly has grown up. Float has already been praised by the media and critics and has been hailed as the band’s best by a mile, I must concur.
If you are not familiar with FM, you are in for quite the treat, and if you are a long time fan you will love it as well. There are the songs that you expect from the Mollies, the rowdy, lift-your-glass-in-the-air blue-collar anthems such as Paddy’s Lament (No More) and Man With No Country. Then there are those that completely took me by surprise such Lightning Storm, Float, and The Story So Far. These have a completely new feel to them, and then I realized what it was that I was hearing: art. As of the writing of this post, Lightning Storm is my current favorite song.
There is truly something here for everyone to enjoy, as Dave King is a brilliant lyricist, each song no matter how rowdy has deep meaning; each line has a specific purpose to the song as a whole. The magic of Flogging Molly truly shines on this album, more than any other; although it does not quite capture their legendary live show atmosphere.
Album rating: A
Sounds like: The Pogues meets Bob Dylan
Buy? Yes!
